‘Ere Be Dragons maps unknown territories, controlled by the heart beat of the players as they walk around Nottingham City Centre and resulting in an interactive installation. Active Ingredient have discovered that by plugging people’s heart rate into a pocket PC they can see into people’s inner world. The longer you stay in this world, the more likely you are to find something out there.

From the Galleries of Justice, audiences will be able to watch a map of the city being created live by players who plug in their hearts and set out to explore the real world, in order to reveal their inner world. Overlayed onto a real map of Nottingham, people create and occupy territories, overlap with
other players and keep the world alive by keeping their heart rates healthy.

Active Ingredient have worked within the arts sector for the past eight years. AI have created large-scale installations, web based work and facilitated a wide range of projects. Although based in Nottingham, they have toured work to various spaces and venues across England, including a national tour of Chemical Garden and collaborating internationally via the web. Active Ingredient also set up and runs Moon Radio WebTV, an online broadcasting channel that has been streaming live work onto the Internet over the past four years.

Commissioned by Radiator Festival for New Technology Art, ‘Ere Be Dragons has been developed by Active Ingredient in collaboration with The Lansdown Centre for Electronic Arts and the London Sport Institute at Middlesex University, Hewlett Packard Mobile Bristol, Sciencescope and the Mixed Reality Lab, University of Nottingham.
