A performance of new music and audio-reactive video created by Paul Deats and Ben Mawson-Harris to explore new and exciting technologies in music and video. Alongside composing and performing original new music, they incorporate a visual element to their work that offers a bold move away from the often formulaic use of video in live music. Plankton, their first work, uses footage of microscopic aquatic life forms to create a direct visual representation of their music that is both spontaneous and abstract. Using multiple video projectors, separate images are affected by their instruments in real time; a nematode dancing to a bassline, an amoeba writhing to a chord progression. Their purely instrumental music combines styles from funk and elements of jazz, through to ambient and lounge, and incorporates an intriguing rhythm part formed from multiple improvisational recordings, recreated and controlled entirely on-the-fly.
